Aikido is a martial art which is based upon the hand to hand fighting techniques of the Samurai. Literally translated Aikido means "The Way of Harmony". In Aikido one learns to redirect the force of an opponents attack using it against them. Thus regardless of size and strength Aikido is a very effective means of self-defence. Aikido techniques emphasize smooth and relaxed movement to develop balance and timing in order to focus ones physical and mental power.
